Hey Peeps,
Are you a business owner? Do you know how essential social media is for your business growth and marketing strategy? Do you also learn about the algorithms social networks use to display content and how they can significantly impact your reach? If not, read the complete article, because here we will discuss how social media algorithms work and how to optimize your content for maximum exposure!
Social Media Algorithms
First, let’s understand, what is a social media algorithm.
Every social network has its set of rules to determine what content is shown to the users. These sets of rules are referred to as Social Media Algorithms. The order of your newsfeed to the ads running on the platform is determined by Social Media Algorithms.
If you are using social media for the past few years, you may remember the time when news feeds used to display the posts in reverse chronological order. But now, the time has changed and so have the algorithms.

For everyone, it’s important to have an understanding of how the social media algorithm works which in turn will help you to optimize the content and make the algorithms work for you.
Here are a few tips from me:
Post relevant content. Understand your target audience and create content according to the demand. For example, if you’re targeting millennials, then make sure that your content is relevant to their interests and needs.
Use relevant hashtags. Hashtags are the best way to reach more people. The hashtag helps your content get discovered by relevant users who are searching for posts related to your niche.
Use high-quality images and videos. Users nowadays are more likely to engage with content that is visually appealing.
Post consistently. Regular posting will help you build an audience of engaged users who are more likely to see your content in their feed.
Each social networking platform has its own algorithm, and hence, it is important to understand each platform. Also, we need to make a note that these platforms update their algorithms constantly and improve the user experience. Here are some tips below to optimize the content based on the respective platform.
Facebook Algorithm
Facebook changes its algorithm constantly. However, there are a few key points to note that you can focus on to ensure that your target audience sees your content.
Relevancy: As mentioned above, post content that is relevant to your target audience.
Engagement: Create user engagement posts that will let your audience like, comment, and share your post. If your content gets more engagement, then it is more likely it is to be seen by other users.
Timing: Keep a check on your planner. Your post timings can also impact your reach. Do trial and error and find the best time to post when the max of your audience is online and engaging with your post.
Twitter Algorithm
Twitter has a quite similar algorithm to Facebook. It too considers factors such as relevancy and engagement. The other key factors are.
Hashtags: Unlike others, hashtags play a very important role on Twitter. Use less but relevant hashtags to help your content reach the right audience.
@Mentions: Mentions are also important on Twitter. If relevant, mention an influencer in your post once or twice a week to get discovered by him/her who has a large number of followers.
Retweets: Retweets again are one of the most powerful ways to increase your reach on Twitter. One retweet is enough to get discovered by thousands of other audiences.
Instagram Algorithm
The Instagram algorithm is quite similar to other social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. On Instagram also, we need to look into the factors such as engagement and relevance. However, there are a few other key factors that you should be aware of.
Hashtags: Hashtags play an important role on Instagram as compared to any other social network. If you use relevant hashtags, it is more likely to get discovered by your audiences who are searching for specific topics or content.
Likes: Likes can be considered one of the most critical factors in the Instagram algorithm. If your content gets more likes, the more likely it is to be seen by other users. However, these days Instagram has come with this new feature of “hide likes count”.
@Mentions: Tags or Mentions are also important on Instagram. Mentioning another user in your post helps the other user to discover your post. It is again a great way to get the attention of influencers and other users with large followings.
Comments: Comments are again very important as it lets other users build trust. They show that your content is worth reading and engaging. Also, they help your content get discovered by users searching for specific topics/content.
LinkedIn Algorithm
For LinkedIn, relevancy and engagement are important factors.
Connections: LinkedIn is all about making more relevant connections. Your content is likely to reach more connections if you have a large connection on LinkedIn.
Engagement: The LinkedIn algorithm is designed in a way that the more engagement your content gets, the more likely it is to be seen by other connections. Hence, be consistent in posting high-quality content that encourages connections to like, comment, and share your posts.
Groups: Be a part of relevant LinkedIn groups. This will help you to connect with relevant audiences and help to get more engagement on your post.
Endorsements: LinkedIn endorsements are just like Facebook likes and Instagram comments. The more endorsements your content gets, the more likely it is to be seen by other connections.
Final Thoughts
As you read from above, each social media platform has its own algorithm. And the most important factor of all is to have high-quality and relevant content that encourages other users to engage. So get out there and start sharing!
